Types of NEET cutoffs

The students who are planning to take admission to the MBBS course should first qualify for the cutoff score of NEET UG. Different colleges have different cutoffs for admission. The more the reputed college, the higher the cutoff for admission. Government colleges generally require higher scores.

Usually, there are two types of cutoffs:

  1. Qualifying cutoff
  2. Admission Cutoff

Let’s read about the different categories of cutoffs in detail.

Qualifying Cutoff

The qualifying cutoff is a predefined cutoff set by NTA, for those who don’t know, NTA is the government agency responsible for conducting the NEET examination and counselling. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score the candidate requires to qualify for admission to medical colleges. The candidates with a valid NEET UG cutoff are eligible for the counselling rounds. If any candidate fails to score the minimum cutoff, he/she is not eligible to apply for the counselling round.

NTA issues the qualifying cutoff on the scorecard for the respective year. Different categories have different qualifying cutoff scores. Below we have mentioned the category-wise cutoff score for NEET UG required to take admission to the MBBS Course:

  • General (UR) category - 50% (160/720)
  • General (PH) category - 45% (143/720)
  • SC/ST/OBC - 40% (125/720)

Admission Cutoff

Admission cutoff is the cutoff that the candidates require to get admission to any particular college. Different colleges have different NEET cutoffs for admission. Usually, the cutoff depends on the availability of seats, number of students applying, and the college's reputation. Various factors determine the admission cutoff of different top government and private MBBS colleges of Gujarat.

  • The cutoff varies for All India Quota and State Quota. The cutoff for State Quota students is generally less than that of All India Quota candidates.
  • The admission cutoff mostly depends on the reputation of the college. More reputed colleges get more applications, and hence the cutoff increases.
  • Government Medical colleges have higher cutoffs as they are much more affordable than the private colleges. Hence, more students apply, and the cutoff increases.
