Overview
The National School of Drama is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. It was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its constituent units in 1959. In 1975, it became an independent entity and was registered as an autonomous organization under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Training in the School is highly intensive and is based on a thorough, comprehensive, carefully planned syllabus which covers every aspect of theatre and in which theory is related to practice. As a part of their training, students are required to produce plays which are then performed before the public. The syllabus takes into account the methods of great theatre personalities who have shaped contemporary theatre in all its variety. For performances, NSD provides three auditoriums: Abhimanyu: 350 seats, Sammukh: 96 seats, and Bahumukh: 75-100 seats for pupils to demonstrate their abilities. Admissions
The National School of Drama in Delhi (NSD Delhi) is among the leading institutions for theatre education and dramatic arts. It was founded in 1959 by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its component units. It became an independent body in 1975 and was recognized as a self-governing organization under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, provides complete funding to NSD Delhi.
Students experience a practical exploration of the evolution of drama, including lessons on Sanskrit drama, contemporary Indian theater, traditional Indian performance forms, Asian drama, and Western dramatic conventions. NSD Delhi features two performance divisions — the Repertory Company (1965) and the Theatre-in-Education Company (1989). Additionally, NSD Delhi runs an active Extension Programme that organizes workshops and events for both adults and children throughout India. NSD Delhi provides a three-year full-time Diploma in areas associated with theatre studies. The new school year starts in July each year.
