Overview

The University of Madras was established in 1857 as a public/government university. It is located in Chepauk, Chennai, and has been given the status of  UPE (University with Potential of Excellence) by the UGC. Not only that, it also has been accredited with an ‘A++’ grade by the NAAC. As per the NIRF rankings 2024, Madras University is #12 in the state public university category, #39 in the ‘University’ category, and #64 in the ‘Overall’ category.

Madras University takes admission based on merits scored in previous qualifying exams and performance in entrance exams. The accepted entrance exams at the university include TANCET, MAT, CAT, etc.

The University of Madras has four campuses in Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, and Taramani, all of which offer great infrastructure facilities with systematic and scientific training to students from the affiliated colleges. More than 1,30,000 students are enrolled in the university benefiting from clean hostels, sports complexes, dedicated labs, 4 libraries with 3 lakh books & 15,000 journals, and much more.
